Kiki Smith

Kiki Smith was born in 1954 in Nuremberg, Germany and is one of the most prominent female artists in the world- working in all mediums. Her work is about the body- specifically about the differences between our own private perceptions of our bodies and public stereotypes of the body and sexuality. Kiki Smith moves beyond feminism to focus on the body affected through processes such as aging or giving birth. Kiki Smith is a prolific printmaker and photographer as well as an important sculptor. Smith received the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture in 2000 and has participated in the Whitney Biennial three times in the past decade. Smith’s work is in numerous prominent museum collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The Museum of Modern Art featured a major retrospective of Kiki Smith’s prints and multiples in 2003. Smith lives and works in New York City.
